There really can be no generalizing of the set of rules that one who is working with children with developmental disabilities can follow. The mind-to -body connection of each of these children is unique and thus each must be dealt with uniquely.
Each of these children has a different balance capacity, spatial recognition and awareness level on which their various body movements depend on. These are the things that the worker must first stress hard on to improve before going on to any other form of learning.
Workers dealing with these children must first stress on boosting the child’s physical balance and strength. After this they can then move on to sharpening their mental and emotional faculties which greatly depend on the first step.
A lot of research has gone into providing these children with the most appropriate movement games that will help to nurture their self-regulation.
These games have many motor activities that slowly but surely take the child up from one level of stamina and resistance to the next.
One recently implemented program has been yoga. It has been seen to help the children master their symmetrical movements and maintaining balance by going through all of the yoga poses that they can do. The exercises also make sure that the child’s muscles get stronger without putting too much strain on them.
As much as yoga and the movement games have proven to help these children differently, researchers will not stop their work as they are more than sure that there have to be other methods of improving these children’s fitness.
One such new method that researchers are trying to perfect on is incorporating different types of music into their fluid motion exercises. These have been noticed to stimulate their rhythm and balance.
