Life is busy and we all know it. There may hardly seem to be enough time in the day to get everything done, let alone to find time to meditate but it is because of the stress of a busy life that most people are willing to find the time. Meditation doesn’t have to be something else to add to your to-do list and it isn’t hard to find time to incorporate it into your daily life. Meditation is merely taking the time to reflect on your inner person, your life, your goals and your spirituality. In short, it means taking time for you.

To integrate meditation into day-to-day life, it’s important to discover a time of day when it will work best for you. Many people find it best to meditate in the early hours of the morning or late at night. These are the times of the day that are often the least hectic and when we find peace and relaxation are easiest to achieve. However, if you aren’t a morning person or can’t wind down at night, perhaps you need to find a bit of solitude in the afternoons. Think about a time of day when you have a few moments to yourself, and take them.

If you already have a daily schedule that incorporates exercise, use the time immediately before or after for meditation. Many yoga practitioners integrate meditation into their yoga rituals but even those who don’t practice yoga can meditate for a few moments as a form of cool down after exercising. Finding the right time for you is essential to integrating meditation into daily life.

Some individuals are so stressed by their hectic schedules that relaxation simply ceases to exist. The inability to relax creates stress on the body and mind which can lead to serious health problems if left unchecked. If you struggle with the idea of meditation because you cannot sit still or focus, try easing yourself into it. Start with five minutes of deep breathing exercises when you feel the most stressed. When you learn to control your breathing and relax, add five more minutes and try to learn to control your mind. Let your mind drift inward and visualize yourself being relaxed and stress-free. In time, you will find that the few moments of meditation you allow yourself begin to make a difference.

Other ways to aid in meditation include the use of aromatherapy and audio. If you need to aid the process or you can’t find a quite place to meditate, try using meditation music or soothing sounds to drown out outside noises. The use of aromatherapy can also aid in meditation if you use scents that are relaxing and soothing rather than invigorating. The combination of sounds and aromas may be just what you need to create the right atmosphere of peace and relaxation.

Even if you have shied away from meditation in the past, for whatever reason, consider trying it merely as a way to relieve stress. Many people find that after integrating meditation into their daily lives, they are more focused, more productive, and have less stress than before. If you need help, consult a yogi or even visit a massage therapist to help you learn to relax.

The key to integrating meditation into your daily life is the same as creating any new routine. It is very much about developing the habit rather than assuming it will develop on its own. If you make it a point to find time to meditate once every day for 21 days, you will most likely have developed the habit to the point where it is less of an effort and more of a reward.

Remember to find the time that works best for you, create an atmosphere that is conducive to quiet relaxation, and consider it an indulgence until you are used to it. Also keep in mind that there is no right or wrong way to practice meditation, as long as it benefits you. Once you have found a way to meditate regularly, you will wonder how you ever managed stress without it.
